Doing What Brains Do

Did you know that our primitive brains are designed to perform three basic functions?

  • Seek pleasure

  • Avoid pain

  • Be efficient

Pleasure can look like wine, dessert, sex, TV, sleep and anything else that give you that dopamine hit that feels good.

Pain can look like rejection, disappointment, embarrassment, heartbreak and anything else that feels like a “negative” emotion.

Efficient can look like putting in as little effort as possible and not exerting too much energy.

So, it makes perfect sense that you would rather sit on the couch, binge watching Netflix while shoving chips in your mouth than clean your bathroom.

There is NOTHING wrong with you.

You are not lazy. You are not lacking willpower. You are not unmotivated.

Your brain is just doing what brains do.

In its own paranoid, judgey way, your brain is trying to protect you from what it perceives as danger. And even though you are not actually being chased by a tiger, it still sees danger all around.

Along with every day actions like asking someone out on a date, filing taxes and having a hard conversation with a partner, it can also feel dangerous to step outside of your comfort zone, try new things, push yourself, work hard and dream big.

So the next time you notice your brain trying to hold you back, you can just acknowledge it by saying “thank you, brain, but I’ve got this.”

You’ve got this. I believe in you,
