The Little Things

This may not be the most wonderful time of the year for everyone around you. I know it isn’t always for me. And I’m sorry if this includes you, too.

I usually start out with ideas of grandeur to bake homemade goodies for teachers and neighbors. To have professional photos taken for holiday cards that will arrive on time. To volunteer at a soup kitchen or food pantry and adopt a family or two.

I’ve done some of these things in the past. But I’ve learned the hard way that simple goes a long way.

This year I took a selfie with my son and our cat in front of our tree. Holiday cards went out on time and were given to neighbors and community workers in lieu of gifts. Teachers (only the favorites) were given simple gift bags with notebooks and pens. I spent one day on amazon ordering gifts. And we’ll be making peanut butter and jelly sandwiches to hand out to people in need in our neighborhood park.

I’ve already declined two invitations to holiday parties. I resisted the urge to buy cookie tins for the people I may have missed. I’ve given up control over what other people want to buy my son for Christmas.

Instead, I’m spending my time taking him to the movies to watch Elf and The Grinch. Decorating our gingerbread house and laughing at our elf on the shelf. Sleeping in and doing art projects at night. And staring out at my light-up reindeer that I bought last year on a holiday clearance sale.

I’m focusing on the little things. The traditions. The magic. The joy.

It’s okay if it doesn’t feel special to you. If you feel dread instead of cheer. If you’d rather hide than celebrate. Be gentle with yourself and those around you. We all deserve a little bit of grace.

Aloha,

Suzanne
