The Gift of Good Enough
When my son was little, I used to knock myself out trying to make the holidays magical.
Elf on the Shelf
The perfect tree
Pictures with Santa
Family photo shoot
Cookie decorating
Holiday cards
The list goes on and on and on…
And it wasn’t just the holidays that had me bending over backwards. I volunteered at his school. I made my husband home cooked meals. I packed them both healthy lunches. I cooked. I cleaned. I meal prepped. I couponed. I worked out. I organized and coordinated and executed. I made lists and spreadsheets and color coded calendars. I performed and produced and I never stopped moving.
Then, somewhere between losing my husband and the pandemic, my world was turned upside down. My perspective completely changed. I no longer had the bandwidth for much of anything, let alone striving for perfection. My standards were lowered from unrealistic to good enough.
Now, if you’re a people pleaser like I am, you’re probably cringing right now. But don’t worry. This did not mean I was no longer feeding my child or keeping my house clean. But it did mean that you probably couldn’t eat off my floors or count on me to organize any field trips or remember to return library books on time. None of the little things mattered.
And it felt like a gift.
I learned how to say no. I learned how to set boundaries. I learned to recognize my limits. I learned about what was important and what wasn’t. I stopped worrying about what people might think and only worried about taking care of us.
I want to pass this gift on to you.
What can you do less of?
What can you take off your plate?
What would you like to prioritize?
What matters?
Forget about perfection. Imagine if you aimed for good enough…
You’ve got this. I believe in you.
