What Will People Say?
I recently realized that I wanted to make a big change. It wasn’t something I initially thought of on my own. An opportunity was presented to me. And when I thought about it, I got butterflies in my stomach. I giggled with nervous excitement and said to myself, can you imagine? I wondered if it was even possible.
But almost immediately, the drama set in.
What would people think?
That I failed.
That I made a mistake.
That I didn’t try hard enough.
That I don’t deserve it.
That I shouldn’t do it.
That I’m insane.
That it doesn’t make sense.
The truth is, we never know what’s going through someone else’s mind. But when we worry about what other people will think, it’s usually because we have wondered if these thought about ourselves may be true.
But how do you know when you’ve failed?
Who is in charge of deciding what you deserve?
How do you quantify how hard you tried?
The only person who can determine if what you want makes sense is you.
We don’t need other people’s perspective, permission or understanding to decide what we want. It doesn’t have to make practical or financial sense. It doesn’t have to look good on paper. People will have opinions. They will have input and questions and lived experience to share. But the only one living this life is you.
If you didn’t worry about what other people might think, what would you do differently?
You’ve got this. I believe in you,
Suzanne
